Well, just like any broadband connection, you may be set to handle faster speeds, however you and anyone else using the same ISP must share the total amount of bandwidth available to your ISP.

Plus you must take into consideration, everyone and their dog is trying to download that file right now, so you are all sharing the available bandwidth from where ever you may be downloading from.
Most broadband providers, use a config file to set the maximum upload and download speeds for their modems. When you first turn on the modem and connect to the net, it querries the ISP and asks for that config file and sets its self up.

Just because you have broadband, and can handle up/download speeds faster that a dial-up doesnt always mean you will get it.

Look at it this way:

Imagine a 10 lane highway with a speed limit of 70mph (a.k.a. the available bandwidth and config setting). With not alot of people trying to go to the same place, traffic moves along pretty fast and most times at 70 mph.
However, when the whole city is all on that same highway trying to get to the same place, traffic moves along pretty slow and occasionally gets backed up (hence server que's and slow downloads).

Make sense?

Ahh, bandwidth. The mysterious force that rules the internet.
:D

Actually, Fayd is referring to the connection that feeds your ISP. Everyone customer uses that final connection to the net. There are a few things you can do though. Do you have PPPOE or just standard DSL. You can download an MTU tweak at speedguide.net and it can help improve your machines performance. Also consider stopping unused services and updating your network cards drivers.

Also, have you updated your Antivirus...you or someone else in your house could have a virus on their computer.

yea thats what i was thinking, my mom and I (observe the proper grammer) have the new macafee, i update it whenever it tells me too

the fire wall sucks, im thinking about ditching it and getting a norton virus scan/firewall system, like the new 2004.

but my best guess is that my moms *)(&&%$# kazaa fed her PC with spyware, and the only reason i dont get it is cause i dont have kazaa, or the routers firewall blocks it. but i think its kazaa.

&(^%)(*%^*()E%$%P$#%$&*(^%$#*$^#%)(&)(^T%*()*()*())*((!!!! KAZAA!

Raider just download spybot or adaware. Both are good anti-spyware programs. In fact you may want to get both.

Raider, software firewalls are okay but I much prefer routers. Make sure you are using DSL cable modem router or something. Software firewalls are going to use CPU time that you don't want to give up. Give us some brand information and we can help you.
