I just installed a new ISDN modem. Install runs fine on Windows 2000 for the Eicon DIVA T/A ISDN Modem. Windows recognizes the modem fine. Modem queries run fine. Create the dial-up connection for modem and dial out. It connects fine. I can ping the main game server and connect to battlecom IP. I can launch BF1942 and connect to the main server by plugging in IP, but cant browse other games. Results of ipconfig /all show an IP, SubNet, Gateway, and DNS server entries. I cannot browse the internet at all. :enh:
The properties for the modem are set to obtain ip and dns entries automatically, also tried manual setting of DNS servers. There is no GW option other than using default gateway on remote network.
I know it has to be something in my Windows 2000 setup that is doing this. I turned off a service or something. But, I am stumped. It appears that if you connect to a specific IP it works fine. Trying to do anything that requires DNS resolution is not working. What am I doing wrong?
Any suggestions (short of reinstalling winblows....) appreciated.

My best advice, talk to your avatar. That wrench should be good for something.
Sorry Evil, that kind of problem is beyond my scope.
Usually the cause of what you are experiencing, is a corrupt IP stack.
Goto control panel and to network settings. Then delete TCP/IP from your machine. Then ADD a new protocol, from the CD, under Microsoft > TCP/IP. Let it re-install the Windows IP stack, then reboot your machine.
For some reason, this happens to alot of people using a dial-up connection under windows. When I was working as an admin at a dial-up ISP I had to expalin to people to do this on a daily basis.
Not sure why it happens, other than the fact that MS cant write an IP stack worth shit.

If you can do pings and traces try re-running the internet connection wizard again to "reset" the connection being used for internet access.

Unfortunately neither worked. The wierdest thing Ghengis is I can do pings to ip's but NOT tracert's:enh:
I can connect to our BF1942 server and my ping is sweet on this modem. :D I can use PCA to get into both the main and BC servers w/o issues. I cannot browse any in game servers. I can connect to BC with it as well. It is very strange. I went so far as to uninstall networking completely from Windows 2000. Then re-installing with only the modem installed and not the NIC card in the system. Same results. I can ping out to the internet but anything that requires a name resolution is dead. At least that is what I think is happening :enh:
The good thing is that I can turn on the NIC at anytime and connect with the ISDN LAN Modem. So at least it doesnt kill my internet access.

Re-install completely. Now I can connect fine with the new ISDN modem. Pings down around 160 spiking to 190 on our server playing RS. Used to be around 190 spiking to 250. What a difference. Downloading files at 14-15KB/sec which is better than before, and when connected to ISP with compressions upport it runs around 20+. Very nice. Gave a whole new life to the old ISDN modem. I am connected directly to the modem now, so my ping is even better. And I can shutoff the home network at will. Running Tiny Personal Firewall and all is fine.
The only thing I didint try before re-installing was to rebuild the route table. Talked with one of our engineers and he said that I probably had a bad route table. About the only thing I didnt try.
Thanks for the inputs guys.
