Ok does anyone know a better way to restore the SOFTWARE hive of the registry in win2k, other than from a recent tape backup?

I get a STOP 0x000000001e error in "ntoskrnl.exe"

I have researched this problem and the only way I have found to fix it, is from a backup of the software hive.

Well, I dont have a backup of the software hive for that damn machine!!

So I need to find another way.

Sounds like a job for the rescue disk. You can use your Win2K CD too boot up and perform a rescue. Essentially it will rerun setup but only as far as config/driver istallation. It _should_ let you slide by without messing up any software configuration but it's been a really long time since I've had to do this and my memory can sometimes be faulty.

Check the MS KB for details on Win2K recovery.

I already checked the MS KB and according to the brilliance of Microsoft, the rescue disk will not work.
